At a referendum in Paris last month, almost 55% voted in favor of a specific parking rate for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for non-residents. The higher charges will apply to SUVs weighing more than 1.6 metric tons that are hybrid or have a combustion engine, as well as electric SUVs weighing over 2 metric tons. According to Jens Müller, deputy director and head of policy and research at the Clean Cities campaign group, "what happens in Paris usually doesn't stay in Paris." Its plans to introduce higher parking charges for heavier vehicles which is due to come into force next June. It's a nod to the fact that pollution isn't the only potential issue with SUVs, with space and safety also of concern.

Paris CNN —Six people remain in a critical condition and one person is missing after a gas explosion in central Paris on Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office told CNN on Thursday. Francois Braun, France’s health minister, told CNN affiliate BFMTV Thursday that some of those injured are suffering from “extremely significant burns,” while others have suffered “significant traumatic injuries” due to the blast. Paris CNN —Can humans and rats live together? Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is forming a committee to study “cohabitation” – to what extent humans and rodents can live together – one of her deputies said Thursday during a city council meeting. Boulard had called upon the city government to outline a more ambitious plan against the proliferation of rats in public spaces. The study is being financed by the French government, though the city of Paris is a partner in the project. She added that she was asking the French High Council on Public Health to weigh in on the debate.

Paris CNN —Since being launched in 2007, Paris’ public Vélib’ rental bikes have proven a hit with tourists and locals as a trouble-free way to get around the French capital, especially in summer when Metro trains are hot and crowded. In recent weeks, activists have turned some Vélib’ cycles into billboards featuring unexpected messages from a guerrilla advertising campaign opposing abortion rights. The people who put up these stickers “would be overjoyed to revisit abortion rights,” Rotjman, a feminist campaigner since 1974, told CNN. Calls for justiceVélib' rental bikes have proved hugely popular with locals and tourists since their 2007 launch. Vélib’ has yet to confirm how many bikes are impacted and when they will be restored.
